Skaftafell National Park & Svínafellsjökull, 1/12: Standing on the edge of the glacier

Once we had crossed over the glacial moraine (dirt and rocks pushed up into a heap as the glacier melts and crushes downwards) we were stood on the edge of the glacier - although due to the layer of dirt that builds up at the edge, it wasn't obvious at this point - as you can see in the picture below.

At this point we put our crampons on, and had a short lesson about how to walk in them - going down hill is particularly difficult although as it turned out, the slope that they had us practicing on was about twice as steep as anything we would come across once we got onto the glacier proper.

We then headed onto the glacier.
